Herbalism is the art of healing through the use of herbs and other plantlife. I should stress immediately that just because something is natural, it doesn't mean that it's safe. You should always seek professional medical advice. So, if you consult with a herbalist, make sure that you discuss it with a conventional GP as some herbs are contraindicated with certain medications. If you do decide to try visiting a herbalist, make sure that they are qualified - there are all sorts of charlatans who will take your money and prescribe you something that may do more harm than good. Your GP may be able to recommend a reputable Western or Chinese herbalist.

I myself am not a qualified herbalist. I do intend to pursue a course in herbalism some time in the near future, but as I'm currently studying towards a degree in Natural Sciences, I probably ought to wait a little while and not stretch myself too thinly. Ideally though, I can see myself taking up a suitable course some time within the next few years - even if it means taking a break from my degree.

So, I'm not qualified - so why do I have section about herbalism? Because I do prepare, and advise on, herbal 'cures' for myself, family and friends. I do this because I know the herbs that I use - and if I intend to use any that are 'unfamiliar' to me, I familiarise myself with them pretty darn quickly! My remedies are usually in the form of a tea, decoction, or poultice - and my 'success rate' is very good.

There's not much else I can say about herbalism - whatever knowledge I have, without holding an official qualification, I cannot in good conscience post medical advice on this site. If you do want some advice on herbal remedies, then please feel free to contact me by e-mail (hedgewytch@the-healing-garden.co.uk) and I will advise you to the best of my ability. Please remember that I cannot take any legal responsibility for any advice given - don't let this put you off, I'm still very capable but I have to cover myself legally.
