ANGELICA

• Burn the dried leaves in exorcism rituals. Grow in the garden for protection. Carry the root with you as an amulet.
• Angelica was known as ‘herba angelica’ (angelic herb) in medieval times, because it was believed to cure all ills. The angelica plant is very protective and can be sprinkled at the four corners of the house to ward off evil. Added to baths, angelica removes hexes and any other evil spells that have been cast against you. Angelica is also used in healing incenses and mixtures, and smoking angelica leaves is said to cause visions.

ANISE

• This graceful feathery annual has been cultivated for centuries. Around 1500BC, the Egyptians grew their native anise in quantity to supply food, drink and medicine from the leaves and seeds. Anise is a masculine herb which corresponds with the air element and the planet Jupiter. You can make a magical pillow with anise seeds in it to ensure restful sleep with no nightmares. Fresh anise leaves placed in a room will drive off evil, and they are sometimes placed around the magic circle to protect the magician from evil spirits. Anise seeds are also used in purification baths, especially with bay leaves. It can be used to call forth spirits to aid in magical workings and is also great to use in protection and meditational incense.

In Eastern Europe it was once believed that a young man would love any woman from whose hand he had accepted a sprig of basil. Basil attracts wealth to those who carry it in their pockets, and can be used to attract customers to a place of business by placing some in the cash register or on the door sill. Basil is strewn onto floor because where it is, no evil is said to be able to live. It can be used in exorcism incenses and in purification baths.
